Staff surveys - routine or revolution?: ECC's latest networking event

ECC's latest networking event on staff surveys took place in Leeds last week and proved an exciting opportunity to share and consolidate learning.  Experience in the topic ranged from 20 years to complete novices who had come together to share experience and thoughts to help improve their own practice, from implementation to action plans and beyond.

The issues discussed in Leeds will resonate with all our members.  Whether you are planning your first survey, a follow-up, or have no plans to begin organisation-wide surveys, the issues of engagement, wellbeing and policy development will no doubt have relevance to your work.

A number of speakers joined the group to share their experience of staff surveys and related issues:

o     Jayne Billam, HR Director at Lincoln University, gave valuable insight into getting started with staff surveys, including the work involved and lessons learnt along the way.  Jayne also described how results can be successfully utilised to generate real organisational improvements

o     Kim Shutler-Jones, Manager of the HEFCE funded Wellbeing Project, offered practical advice on how to maximise return rates and tips on how to demonstrate you have listened, implement change and link your results to organisational priorities

o     Cheryl Kershaw, Director of Surveys and Research at Capita, gave the benefit of over 20 years of experience in Public sector staff surveys by sharing useful guidelines for best practice and how to obtain the information you need from your survey

o     Dr. Gonzalo Shoobridge, Consultant at Towers Watson, shared a wealth of experience in public and private sector staff surveys, nationally and internationally.  Gonzalo shared learning on the motivation for organisations to implementing staff surveys, how to ascertain and measure what really matters to your organisation, and finally what drives staff engagement
